Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, his wife Gauri and elder son Aryan Khan's pictures were all over social media recently. Several rumourmongers claimed that Gauri converted to Islam as the family visited Mecca. However, those pictures turned out to be fake and AI-generated. Despite their interfaith marriage, Gauri respects SRK's religion and also follows her own faith. The family celebrates Eid and Diwali with equal enthusiasm. But, did you know that once Shah Rukh asked Gauri to wear a Burqa, read namaaz and change her name to Ayesha Khan?

Notably, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri married on October 25, 1991, following Hindu traditions. However, on their reception day, the Jawan actor asked his newlywed wife to wear a Burqa, read namaaz and change her name.

Recalling the incident, during an old interview with veteran actress Farida Jalal, SRK said, "On our reception day, they (Gauri's family) were all talking in Punjabi. So, I looked at them and said, 'Gauri, put on your burqa, and let's read the namaaz now.’ The whole family stared at us, wondering if I had changed her religion. So I told them, 'From now on, she will wear a burqa all the time, she won’t ever leave the house, and her name will be changed to Ayesha Khan.'"

Well, such a statement by SRK left Gauri's family members shocked. Even they were furious at him.

However, the Pathaan actor realised that the situation might get out of hand. He immediately clarified that he was just joking.

Notably, before their marriage, the couple had decided that Gauri wouldn't convert to Islam. During the first season of Koffee With Karan, when the star couple graced the show, Gauri said, There is a balance. I respect Shah Rukh’s religion, but that doesn’t mean I would convert. I believe everyone should follow their own faith, and there should be mutual respect. Shah Rukh would never disrespect my religion either. During Diwali, I lead the pooja, and the family follows. On Eid, Shah Rukh leads, and we follow. It’s a beautiful arrangement."

Further, talking about their kids Gauri said that they embrace both traditions. But, they tend to lean more toward what Shah Rukh says. Both Diwali and Eid are fantastic for them.
