Shaktimaan in Danger? Mukesh Khanna warns, ‘It’s a war now’

In the 90s, Shaktimaan wasn’t just a TV show; it was a nationwide craze. Mukesh Khanna’s portrayal of India’s first homegrown superhero turned him into a household name and a moral icon. When the Shaktimaan film trilogy was announced, it sparked a wave of nostalgia and excitement among fans who had grown up watching the legend in action.

But now, the movie’s future hangs by a thread, and the OG Shaktimaan is preparing for battle, not against a supervillain, but against the very team planning to bring his creation back to life.

Shaktimaan Trilogy Tangled in 'Technical Issues' & 'Casting Clash'

A few days ago, Khanna hinted that the project had hit a roadblock. However, he remained optimistic about its eventual release. However, in a recent interview with Galatta India, he revealed a far more serious situation; the Rs 600-crore trilogy is stuck in limbo, tangled in 'technical issues' and, more explosively, a casting clash.

While Sony International holds the rights to make the films for seven years, Khanna says he ensured the superhero’s soul would remain intact. “The IPR is still mine. They can’t change Shaktimaan’s values, that’s in writing,” he stressed. But there’s one thing missing: the right to approve the actor who wears the iconic maroon suit.

“I couldn’t get it written that the actor would be cast with my permission. They told me, ‘We’ll consult you, but the final call is ours.’ That’s where I drew the line,” he said.

For years, rumours have swirled that Ranveer Singh was the top choice. Khanna met him for three hours and praised his talent, but ultimately decided he wasn’t right for the role. “Ranveer is a wonderful actor and human being, but I still feel he can’t be cast as Shaktimaan. I remain firm on that,” Khanna stated.

The deadlock has frozen pre-production. “Either change the clause or consult me properly. Without asking me, you can’t deviate from Shaktimaan. Right now, the matter is stuck on casting, the entire film is yet to be made,” he said.

This ambitious project, three massive films with budgets of Rs 150-200 crore each, will not move forward unless Khanna’s concerns are addressed.

“You can’t cast someone who looks like Raavan in the role of Ram. Today’s kids need Shaktimaan,” he said.

Declaring it a fight for principles, Khanna warned, “It’s a war now. If you won’t listen, make Shaktimaan without me. I’ll fight till the end, even in court if needed. I can’t even release the songs or music now because I mistakenly sold those rights earlier.”
