Setback for Samantha & Varun Dhawan but not Priyanka Chopra as Amazon makes fresh announcement

Recent reports confirm that the Indian adaptation of the Citadel franchise, Citadel: Honey Bunny, featuring eminent actors Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan, will not proceed with a second series. Helmed by directors Raj and DK, this adaptation aimed to delve into the history of Nadia's parents, originally portrayed by Priyanka Chopra in the Citadel series. However, the production has been discontinued after its initial series.

Global Adaptations Halted

Italy's version, Citadel: Diana, has also been withdrawn after one series. Nonetheless, Amazon has assured viewers that the central Citadel story will persist. The second series of the original Citadel, featuring Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden, has been greenlit, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed.

Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, said, "Although storylines from Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana shall not pursue independent courses, they will be woven into the second series of the principal Citadel series." He further mentioned that this upcoming release would be the most exciting yet, intensifying the character storylines of Nadia, Mason, and Orlick against the antagonist, Manticore. Citadel Series 2 is slated for international release in the second quarter of 2026.

Mixed Reception and Future Prospects

Since its December 2024 debut, Citadel: Honey Bunny garnered mixed reviews. Some critics found it more captivating than its predecessor, though considered a less significant work by the acclaimed directorial duo, Raj and DK.

This decision aligns with a strategic reshuffle of content at the OTT platform following Jennifer Salke's departure, who had initially championed the Citadel universe. There is also speculation about the potential quiet cancellation of the Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner, but no official announcements have yet been made.
