Remembering Kishore Kumar at 96: A heartfelt chapter from the legend’s life

Ninety-six years ago, a musical genius was born, destined to redefine the sound and soul of Indian cinema. On his birth anniversary, the nation remembers Kishore Kumar, not just for his magical voice and unmatched versatility, but also for the colourful and often controversial life he lived.

Behind the glittering success and humongous achievements lay a journey marked by turbulence. Just like his unpredictable, roller-coaster career, Kishore’s personal life was filled with drama, none more so than in the story of his four marriages.

When Kishore Kumar Opened Up About His Marriages

In a rare 1985 interview, the eccentric genius spoke candidly about his relationships. His first marriage to Bengali singer-actor Ruma Guha Thakurta in 1950 ended amicably.

Kishore Da said, “We were both chasing different dreams. It was nobody’s fault, it just happened.”

Why Kishore Kumar Married Madhubala Despite Her Heart Condition?

But it was his second marriage, to the ethereal Madhubala in 1960, that became the stuff of legend. By then, Madhubala was already battling a serious congenital heart condition.

Kishore Da said, “People asked why I married her, knowing the truth. I loved her. When you love someone deeply, you don’t think about how long you will have them, you just want to be with them.”

The couple faced immense challenges as her health worsened.

The legendary singer said, “I tried to keep her happy, singing for her, making her laugh. But some things are beyond control.”

Madhubala’s death in 1969 left a void in Kishore’s life.

“She wanted to live. But her heart betrayed her," said Kishore Da with a breaking voice.

Kishore Da's Life After Madhubala

In 1976, Kishore married actress Yogeeta Bali, but the union lasted only two years.

“Sometimes love changes, sometimes it fades,” he remarked philosophically.

His fourth marriage, in 1980, to actress Leena Chandavarkar brought stability. “Leena brought peace to my home. After years of storms, I found calm,” he smiled.

Reflecting on his journey, Kishore Da said, “People see the songs, the laughter, the madness. But I have known deep love and deep loss. My marriages were not failures; they were chapters. Each taught me something. Each is part of my song.”

Even today, his words remind us that behind the legend was a man who sang not just with his voice, but with a heart that had loved and lost deeply.
