Rajkummar Rao turns 41: When Stree 2 star revealed being 'cursed' to play small-town guy with marriage issues!

Rajkummar Rao, known for his remarkable journey from theatre to becoming one of Bollywood’s most versatile stars, has carved a niche with films like Shahid, Newton and Stree. From struggles to superstardom, Rao’s charm lies as much in his talent as in his candid, relatable revelations. As the Stree 2 actor rings in his 41st birthday, it’s worth recalling a quirky anecdote he once shared- about being 'cursed'.

Common Pattern in Rajkummar’s Roles

Over the last few years, audiences have noticed a curious pattern- Rajkummar often plays the role of a small-town man caught up in marriage-related troubles. While the National Award-winning actor has showcased incredible versatility, netizens argue that many of his recent films revolve around similar themes.

From his character in Stree, who dreams of settling down, to Mr & Mrs Mahi, where he is a failed cricketer leaning on his wife’s cricketing talent, Rao’s roles often circle back to weddings or relationships. In Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, he plays a newlywed whose life is shaken by a stolen intimate tape, while in Bhool Chuk Maaf, he gets trapped in a time loop right before his wedding. Interestingly, most of these stories are rooted in tier-2 towns.

Rajkummar Rao Reacts to The 'Curse'

During an exclusive conversation with Hindustan Times for promotions of Maalik, Rajkummar opened up about this recurring theme.

"It just happened. Nothing is conscious," he said with a laugh.

The actor reminded fans that his onscreen tryst with weddings goes back much earlier. “It’s not just now. I think I have some connection with weddings because it started with Queen, where the wedding was such an important part of the plot.”

'Shaadi ka shraap' from Queen

Recalling his Queen days, Rajkummar's Maalik co-star Manushi Chhillar pointed out that it was his character who called off the wedding in that film.

Joking about the strange repetition, he said, "I think ussi ka shraap laga hai ki shaadi me hi kuch bhasad ho jaati hai. Ya to haldi me atak jaata hai, ya koi video bana leta hai." (I think it is that curse that is haunting my character, that there is always some chaos at the wedding. Either he gets stuck in the haldi ceremony, or someone records a video.)

When asked how he might break the so-called curse, Rao quipped that perhaps his Queen character 'needs redemption'.
