Popular moms of Hindi Cinema in 80s and 90s who made movies unforgettable

Sulochana Latkar, the iconic mother of Bollywood and Marathi movies died a few days ago. Over the years many actresses made the characters of mothers iconic on the screen and brought alive the depth of motherhood.

Nirupa Roy

Her portrayal of a mother in the movie Deewar became iconic not only because of her acting but also because of the dialogue, “Mere paas maa hai.” While she played most of the motherly roles during the late 60s and all through the 70s she continued to work until the early 80s and was seen as a mother in movies like Gangaa Jamunaa and Charnon Ki Saugandh.

Nutan

The leading star of the 60s and 70s Nutan played some memorable mother roles in Bollywood. Most of the time the story of the film revolved around her character. Be it Meri Jung, Karma, or Guru, the roles Nutan played as a mother stood out among the rest and to date are considered the best.

Farida Jalal

She tried her luck as a supporting actress in many movies during the 60s and 70s like Bobby and Aradhana but her career peaked after she played mother to Kajol in YRF’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. After that, she played the mother in many more hit movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Farida Jalal herself said once that she gained identity and success only after DDLJ.

Reema Lagoo

The one actress who dominated Bollywood’s screen as a mother all through the 90s was Reema Lagoo. Be it Aashiqui, Maine Pyar Kiya, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Hum Aapke Hai Koun, or Hum Saath Saath Hai, Reemaji was mother to most of the superstars from Salman Khan to Shah Rukh Khan.

Smita Jaykar

When it was time for casting an actress in the role of mother for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was looking for an actress who looked beautiful enough to be the mother of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. That is one of the reasons why Smita Jaykar who was already working on the Marathi stage, movies, and television serials got the role.
