While a child needs both mother and father during his growing days, there are times when a woman is forced to bring up her child as a single mother. Here are a few such movies that showcase the struggle and strength of single mothers as they fight the social norms in society:

Nil Battey Sannata

Nil Battey Sannata (2015) was an Aanand L Rai-produced movie starring Swara Bhaskar in the lead. Released internationally with the title The New Classmate, the story revolves around Chanda Sahay (Swara Bhaskar), a household maid who dropped out of school during her high school days. She is a single mother of a young girl Apeksha (Riya Shukla). The story showcases how everyone irrespective of their social status has the right to dream and bring a change in their lives.

Jazbaa

This Indian crime thriller helmed by Sanjay Gupta has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan playing the lead as a single mother whose daughter gets kidnapped by an unsavory criminal. It also stars Irrfan Khan, Jackie Shroff, Shabana Azmi, and Atul Kulkarni. It was a highly hyped flick as Ash was returning to the big screen after a hiatus of five years.

Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh

Directed by Sujay Ghosh, it stars Vidya Balan in the lead along with Arjun Rampal and Jugal Hansraj. The story is about Durga Rani Singh who is accused of being involved in murder and kidnapping. Durga Rani Singh is a single mother who finds her handicapped young girl missing after returning home. The movie is full of twists and turns and the end is indeed shocking.

Paa

While the movie is all about a child suffering from Progeria played by Amitabh Bachchan, it also showcases a beautiful relationship between the boy and his mother (Vidya Balan). Abhishek Bachchan also plays an important role in the movie.

Aaja Nachle

Starring Madhuri Dixit in the lead, the movie is about a single mother and a dancer who returns to her native town after she comes to know that her dance teacher is on his deathbed. Certain incidences motivate her to make sure that the theater of her dance teacher keeps on entertaining the audience.
