The Malayalam film industry has been gaining recognition for its unique style, fresh perspectives, and culturally rooted themes. Their movies are known for realistic storytelling, authentic settings, and focus on socially relevant issues.

In recent years, Malayalam cinema has witnessed a huge resurgence with films like Kumbalangi Nights, Jallikattu, Angamalay Diaries, and Manjummel Boys. The latest to join the esteemed list is the romantic comedy ‘Premalu’.

Made on a budget of Rs 3 crore, the film has already garnered Rs 104 crore globally. Released on February 9, the movie is still running houseful with critical acclaim for its story, music, humour, and cast performance.

The small-budget movie is currently the fifth highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time. Seeing the good reception, the makers have now released it in Telugu and Tamil too.

Despite starring not so popular faces like Naslen K Gafor and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, the film is doing exceptionally well at the box office. Even India’s legendary director SS Rajamouli could not stop heaping praises on the movie.

Taking to his X handle, SS Rajamouli wrote, “So glad Karthikeya did Premalu in Telugu. It was a laugh riot throughout. The writer did a fab job in getting the meme/youth language perfectly right. I liked the girl, Reenu in the trailer itself. In the film even the boy Sachin is lovable. But my fav is Aadi…JK…Just kidding.”

Produced by Pushpa and Vikram fame actor Fahadh Faasil, the movie is still going strong and expected to collect a few more crores before finally being release on OTT platforms.

According to media reports, Premalu will premiere on Disney+Hotstar on March 29, 2024.
