LCU: Vikram and Leo glimpses in Karthi's Kaithi 2! Lokesh Kanagaraj spills beans

Ace Tamil filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj is all set for the release of Thalaivar Rajinikanth's much-awaited flick Coolie. Currently, he is busy promoting the film. Recently, Rajinikanth heaped praise on Lokesh, hailing him as 'Tamil cinema’s SS Rajamouli', no less than a badge of honour.

Such a compliment speaks volumes about Lokesh’s ability to blend grand storytelling with mass appeal, pushing the boundaries of Tamil cinema to new heights. Earlier, reports suggested that after Coolie, Lokesh would start working on Kaithi 2, the sequel to Karthi's Kaithi, which marked the beginning of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). The filmmaker has now revealed fresh details about his plans for the LCU.

Lokesh Kanagaraj's Plans for LCU

During a recent interview with Valai Pechu, Lokesh opened up about his early plans for Kaithi 2 and how the story has evolved after the creation of the LCU.

Lokesh revealed that when he first made Kaithi with Karthi, he had no plans to create a connected universe. However, attentive viewers might notice that the film’s ending hints at Dilli’s past and leaves room for a prequel. 

“We decided to have an open-ended climax so that we could explore the character before he was imprisoned for 10 years. Now, with the cinematic universe in place, we can bring in characters from Leo and Vikram,” Lokesh shared.

With the LCU now comprising Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo, Lokesh says he can integrate popular characters from Vikram and Leo into Kaithi 2. While pre-production has not yet begun, he confirmed that he has already written 30–35 pages of the script.

He also explained how a shared cinematic universe saves time in storytelling. Since audiences are already familiar with many characters from earlier films, he can skip lengthy introductions and dive straight into the main story.
