  • Rajkumar Santoshi has been declared guilty by Jamnagar court in cheque bouncing case.
  • He now faces a jail sentence of 2 years and will have to pay Rs 2 crore to complainant Ashok Lal.

Rajkumar Santoshi has been in the news for the last few weeks now ever since his collaboration titled Lahore 1947 with Sunny Deol was announced. The movie will be produced by Aamir Khan and also features Mona Singh, Preity Zinta, and Shabana Azmi. The film has already gone on floors on February 12. But now it seems it may get stalled as the director has been sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment by the Jamnagar court. Also, the court has asked him to pay Rs 2 crore.

Why did the court sentence Rajkumar Santoshi?

According to Bollywood Hungama, Ashok, who lives in Jamanagar had offered Rs 1 crore as a loan to Rajkumar Santoshi in 2015 for a movie. As repayment of the loan, the Lajja director gave Ashok ten cheques of 10 lakhs each but these cheques bounced. When the cheques were not cleared by the bank, Ashok tried to contact Santoshi but could not reach him. That is when he filed a complaint under the Negotiable Instruments Act against the filmmaker in Jamnagar.

Now the result of the case has come out and the Jamnagar court has asked the filmmaker to deposit double the amount he had taken as a loan from Ashok Lal. Also, the court has sentenced Rajkumar Santoshi to jail of 2 years. It is not the first time that the court has reprimanded Santoshi. Even last year on April 15, the Jamnagar court had asked the Khakee director to pay a penalty of Rs 15 lakh per bounced cheque to Ashok Lal. But Santoshi failed to appear in court.

That is when the court forced him to appear by ordering a bailable warrant against his name. The current sentence and fine are very serious and not much is known about how the filmmaker intends to solve this situation. Now Bollywood fans are wondering whether it will have any impact on the schedule of his upcoming movie with Sunny Deol. Lahore 1947 is expected to hit the theaters on Republic Day next year.
