News Highlights

  • Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivi has failed to create a buzz in Southern states.
  • With more OTT, Hollywood, and Southern releases around the corner, the response to Thalaivi is expected to be lukewarm.
  • Suspension of Kangana’s Twitter account, tiff with multiplexes may also affect Thalaivi’s collections.

Reviews for Kangana Ranaut’s Thalaivi are out and almost all the critics from Bollywood and the Southern part of India have showered praises on the Queen as well as on Arvind Swamy for his role as MGR. While the biopic is slated to release on 10th September in the theaters, a special screening was arranged for close people and critics.

Promotions for the movie have been lacking and have failed to create the right buzz at the ground level which can badly affect Thalaivi’s performance at the box office. There are many more reasons that may spell doom for this otherwise very good movie in which Kangana Ranaut has reportedly given a performance of a lifetime.

Irrespective of the great reviews for Thalaivi, the box-office predictions are not in favour of this Kangana Ranaut and Arvind Swamy-led biopic.

Kangana’s Political Stand May Affect The Movie in Tamil Nadu

The actress has been giving statements that somehow seem as if she is in support of the BJP government which is looked down upon by the majority of people in Tamil Nadu. The last results of the legislative assembly are proof of this. Also, Thalaivi is a dubbed movie that will release in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu. Most of the people from South India love to watch an original Southern film over the dubbed version.

Shruti Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi-led Labaam is all set to release on 9th September and it is expected that people will prefer to watch this Tamil movie instead of Thalaivi.

Similarly, a few major Telugu releases including Tamannaah Bhatia and Gopichand’s Seetimaarr are all set to release this week. Hence, the Tollywood fans are expected to make a bee-line for this original Telugu movie instead of Thalaivi.

Kangana Is Not a Popular Star in South

Apart from the fact that the promotions failed to create the expected anticipation for Thalaivi, Kangana Ranaut also does not have much following in Tamil Nadu which is why the audience may not go to theaters.

Limited Screening and Tiff With Multiplexes

The movie is being screened in only a few theaters across India. Theaters in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, continue to remain closed. This is definitely going to hamper the box-office collection of Thalaivi. More importantly, the producers are offering only a two-week window to the multiplexes which means the film will be released on OTT two weeks after its theatrical release. Contrarily, the multiplexes are requesting a window of at least 4 weeks.

That is why many multiplex owners have decided not to screen the Hindi version of Thalaivi.

Bigg OTT Releases on Friday

Some good movies and series are being released this Friday on OTT channels. These include Nani’s Tuck Jagdish, Arjun Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan’s Bhoot Police, Santhanam’s Dikkiloona, Vijay Sethupathi, and Raashi Khanna’s Tughlaq Durbar and Lucifer Season 6.

The release of Hollywood movies like Shang Chi and F9 is also around the corner. Hence, there is little chance that people will go to watch a biopic in theaters.

Kangana’s Twitter Suspension is a Huge loss For Thalaivi

Twitter is a big platform for movie promotion. The actress had millions of followers on Twitter but she lost the access to reach them after Twitter suspended her account owing to her 'malicious' and 'abusive' posts. It may also affect the performance of Thalaivi at the box office.

So, the verdict around is that despite a good review from the critics, Thalaivi may fail to spell magic at the box office.
