Kalki 2898 AD Sequel: Nag Ashwin confirms, 'Sequel in progress,' talks about his intentions

Nag Ashwin's magnum opus Kalki 2898 AD continues scripting history with a successful theatrical run in the sixth week. Starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani among others, the sci-fi movie remains unaffected by the new releases. With its successful box office collections, Kalki 2898 AD is moving closer to the Rs 1050 crore mark. Meanwhile, anticipation for the Kalki 2898 AD sequel is escalating among fans, who are eagerly waiting for the updates. Now, Ashwin has dropped a big update and confirmed that the sequel is in progress.

During a recent interview, Ashwin confirmed that the work for the sequel is in progress and fans may not have to wait for a long time.

A Bollywood Hungama report quoted the talented filmmaker as saying, "Yes, work is happening on the second one."

Further, talking about the sequel, Ashwin said, "We had shot portions of it in the earlier schedules when part one was being filmed. We shot for about 20 days. But there's still a long way to go in terms of planning and thinking. However, the second part should hopefully take less time to complete and release than the first one."

Notably, Kalki 2898 AD heavily draws inspiration from the Indian Epic Mahabharata and narrates a fictional story of a probable future and the arrival of Kalki, the 10th Avatar of Lord Vishnu. Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan nailed his character as the immortal Ashwatthama, while Kamal Haasan plays the role of antagonist Supreme Yaskin. On the other hand, Prabhas plays the lead character Bhairava, a selfish bounty hunter, while Disha Patani plays his love interest. Meanwhile, Deepika plays the role of Sumati, a pregnant woman, who many believe will give birth to Kalki.

Apart from the character portrayals, the high-end visual effects were jaw-dropping. The visionary filmmaker took five years to develop the movie. The climax of Kalki 2898 AD hinting at Bhairava as reincarnation of Karna and Supreme Yaskin lifting Arjuna's powerful bow 'Gandiva' while regaining strength left fans wondering 'what's next'.

Spilling beans about the sequel, Ashwin said that the second part will continue the story, from where it left in the first part.

Talking about his intentions with Kalki 2898 AD, Ashwin clarified that it was the right time to enlighten people to own stories of the country.

"There is a huge audience in our country- not just in cities, but smaller towns who embrace stories like Marvel and Star Wars. I felt we should explore our homegrown superheroes, it is very Indian," he concluded.
