Johnny Depp
It’s been over eight years since fans last saw Johnny Depp swagger across the screen as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’. Now, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the door may not be closed on Depp’s return after all.
Depp first brought the eccentric pirate to life in The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), followed by four blockbuster sequels- Dead Man’s Chest (2006), At World’s End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011), and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer confirmed he has spoken to Depp about reprising the role in the sixth installment. “If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it... It’s all about what’s on the page,” he said.
Depp’s future with Disney became uncertain during his high-profile defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022. Although Heard’s 2018 op-ed did not name him, Depp claimed it led to the studio distancing itself from him. At the time, he famously told the court he wouldn’t return even for $300 million and a million alpacas.
The sixth Pirates film has been in discussion since 2019, with talks of a reboot. Still, Bruckheimer has expressed hope that Captain Jack Sparrow might make an appearance. For millions of fans, the thought of Depp’s return could be the spark that reignites the franchise’s magic.
