This year’s Indian Idol season has been the most controversial one. While the main controversy was triggered when Amit Kumar said that he was asked to praise the contestants, fans were irritated with a few factors like over-dramatic responses by judges like Neha Kakkar and cheesy soft talk by Himesh Reshammiya.
Many in the audience believed that much of the drama, be it Neha crying or making emotional statements or fake love angle between Arunita and Pawandeep was all for TRP and has indirectly affected the interest of everyone in the show.
Neha Kakkar was badly trolled multiple times and so was Himesh for his stand of always appreciating the contestants graciously despite the fact that many times the performances were not flawless. The controversy surrounding Indian Idol 12 skyrocketed after Amit Kumar’s statement and was soon followed by multiple reactions from leading names from the Indian musical fraternity.
From Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan to Sunidhi Chauhan, Sonu Nigam, Salim Merchant to Abhijeet Bhattacharya- all the leading singers from Bollywood shared their opinions regarding the statement made by Amit Kumar. Abhijeet even indirectly made a taunt at Neha saying that the makers should make someone like him who is quite experienced in singing as the judge and not someone who has become instantly popular because of a few hits on YouTube.
Despite these statements, Neha continues to be the most popular singer of today’s generation and recently became the most followed Indian musical celebrity on the internet. Nevertheless, it cannot be ruled out that the platform of Indian Idol has somewhere lost its credibility and if the producers do not want the audience to turn their back on the show, they would have to either change the panel of judges or would have to make sure that the drama for TRP does not overpower the main essence of the show, which is music.
