How Govinda’s dance moves helped Dharmendra replace Dilip Kumar in Aag Hi Aag

Dilip Kumar, the 'Tragedy King', redefined method acting with timeless classics, while Dharmendra, the 'He-Man of Bollywood', captivated audiences with his charm, versatility, and action-hero persona. Both left behind unforgettable cinematic legacies. Yet, few know that before Dharmendra stepped into the lead role in 1987’s Aag Hi Aag, the part was initially considered for Dilip Kumar. The surprising twist? Govinda’s dance steps changed the course of casting!

When A Young Star Shaped A Veteran’s Destiny

In a candid conversation with Times of India, producer Pahlaj Nihalani revealed that the switch from Dilip Kumar to Dharmendra was not coincidental. The decision was triggered by Govinda’s sensational dance moves in the 1986 hit Ilzaam. Interestingly, both Ilzaam and Aag Hi Aag were produced by Nihalani.

The Loha Set Encounter

Recalling the turning point, Nihalani shared how he visited the Ramgarh sets of Loha to meet his friend Shatrughan Sinha. Dharmendra was present too. To Nihalani’s surprise, the crowd immediately started chanting dialogues from Ilzaam.

That’s when Dharmendra walked up to him, recreating a few of Govinda’s dance steps.
“When Dharmendra saw me- and it was our first meeting- he came up to me dancing a few steps that Govinda had done in 'Ilzaam',” the producer recalled.

Dharam’s Rare Playful Side

Known to be a shy dancer, Dharam lightheartedly told Nihalani, “Mujhe bhi Govinda jaise dance karvao.”

The crowd loved the unexpected sight of the veteran actor copying Govinda’s moves, making the moment unforgettable.

From Dinner Table to Silver Screen

That same evening, Nihalani pitched his next film to Dharmendra.

“I asked Dharmendra if he would like to do my next film, 'Aag Hi Aag',” he recalled. The producer made it clear that the actor would play a father- a pivotal yet demanding part. To his delight, Dharmendra agreed instantly.

The Film That Followed

Directed by Shibu Mitra, who also helmed Ilzaam, Aag Hi Aag turned out to be a commercial success. Dharmendra’s performance won appreciation, proving that the lighthearted 'Govinda moment' had unexpectedly paved the way for one of his memorable roles.
