Govinda claims giving James Cameron ‘Avatar’ title, rejecting lead role
Bollywood actor Govinda recently claimed that he inspired the title of James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic ‘Avatar’ and turned down its lead role. During an interview with veteran actor Mukesh Khanna on his YouTube channel, Govinda revealed he was offered Rs 18 crore to star in the Hollywood blockbuster but declined due to creative and physical concerns.
The 61-year-old actor claimed a Sikh businessman he met in the US introduced him to Cameron years ago. After discussing collaboration over dinner, Govinda suggested the title ‘Avatar’ for Cameron’s project. However, he rejected the role upon learning the protagonist was physically disabled. “James said the hero was handicapped. I refused immediately,” Govinda stated.
Beyond creative differences, Govinda expressed concerns about the film’s demanding requirements. He also mentioned a 410-day shoot schedule and the use of body paint, which he feared would harm his health. “If I paint my body, I’ll end up hospitalized. Our body is our only instrument,” he explained.
Govinda’s assertions faced sharp criticism from filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani, who dismissed them as ‘false.’ In a 2024 interview, Nihalani revealed he had cast Govinda in an unfinished Hindi film titled Avatar in the 1990s. After shooting for 40 minutes, the project stalled due to Govinda’s sudden health issues.
Nihalani speculated Govinda confused the two projects: ‘He forgot my Avatar and started claiming he was offered Hollywood’s. His mind switched from Hindi to English.’ The filmmaker humorously blamed the incident on ‘almonds’ Govinda consumed with tea, causing fainting spells. “What was in those almonds? It’s still a mystery,” Nihalani quipped.
Amid the controversy, Govinda prepares for a cinematic return after a six-year hiatus. During an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, he announced three upcoming films set for release this year.
