Fawad Khan
Pakistani actor Fawad Khan has expressed deep sorrow over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists. Taking to Instagram Stories, Khan wrote:
"Deeply saddened to hear the news of the heinous attack in Pahalgam. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this horrifying incident and we pray for strength and healing for their families in this difficult time."
Indian actress Vaani Kapoor, his co-star in the upcoming film Abir Gulaal, also shared her grief, writing on social media:
"Have been numb, at a loss of words since the time I have seen the attack on innocent people in Pahalgam. Gutted. Devastated. My prayers are with the families."
Despite their messages of condolence, both actors are facing a wave of backlash for promoting Abir Gulaal, which features Khan in a lead role. Social media has erupted with criticism, with users accusing them of insensitivity during a time of national grief. One user commented, “You betrayed our nation, Vaani,” while another said, “Shame on these low life people who dance on people’s grave.”
The controversy has reignited long-standing tensions surrounding the participation of Pakistani artists in Indian cinema. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has once again warned against the release of any film featuring Pakistani actors, threatening action if Abir Gulaal is screened in Maharashtra. Additionally, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has echoed concerns about the film’s release, citing national sentiment and security.
The backlash is not limited to Abir Gulaal. Fans have extended their boycott calls to Vaani Kapoor’s other upcoming projects, including Raid 2, set to release on May 1. Online campaigns targeting the actress are gaining traction, with hashtags urging viewers to avoid her films.
Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulaal is scheduled to release on May 9. However, the controversy surrounding its cast has cast uncertainty over its release. Fawad Khan, who last appeared in an Indian film in 2016, had gained widespread popularity through roles in Kapoor & Sons and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil—the latter also facing political hurdles due to his involvement.
