Don Hollywood remake with Amitabh Bachchan reprising his role!
Millennium star Amitabh Bachchan's Don remains a cult classic. This 1978's action-thriller cemented Big B's status as a superstar. The gripping storyline, punchlines and memorable songs, together made it a landmark movie in Indian cinema. All thanks to the iconic writer-duo Salim-Javed. Further, Don also inspired numerous remakes in India as well as Pakistan. Well, what will be the audience response if Amitabh Bachchan reprises his role in the Hollywood remake of Don?
Hollywood actor Kal Penn, known for his roles ranging from self-conscious Gogol in The Namesake to stoner Kumar Patel in the Harold and Kumar franchise, while speaking at a session, titled You Can’t Be Serious, at the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival at Hotel Clarks Amer on Friday, talked about his urge to remake Don in Hollywood, with Big B reprising his role.
At the festival, Kal talked about drawing inspiration from American actors including Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, and Mira Nair.
Kal said, "The influences I had were mostly American, like Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, and Mira Nair certainly from the time I was a kid when she did Mississippi Masala and looking at her I thought if this woman can do it, then maybe there’s a path forward.”
Further, talking about his urge for Don remake and Amitabh Bachchan, he said, "I remain... I mean, who isn’t a huge Amitabh Bachchan fan? The original Don is what I would love to remake, but it can still be escapist; it can still be in the same way, same colour palette, just like set in Brooklyn or set in Ohio."
Written by Salim-Javed, Action-thriller Don was the third highest-grossing film of 1978. It was classified a golden-jubilee by Box Office India. Amitabh bagged the Best Actor (Male) award at the 26th Filmfare Awards. The film was produced on a budget of Rs 70 lakh and reportedly grossed Rs 7 crore.
While the 'Chorra Ganga Kinarewala' played dual roles (Don and Vijay) in the movie, Zeenat Aman and Pran played key roles. Amitabh's performance in Don is widely regarded as one of his best. Be it his iconic dialogue delivery, charismatic presence, comic timing or action sequences, fans were left in awe of the movie.
The movie inspired numerous remakes including Rajinikanth's Billa, NTR's Yugandhar, Mohanlal's Sobharaj and Shah Rukh Khan's Don.
