Dilip Kumar's 102nd B'Day: Controversies and unbelievable terrible truths

Dilip Kumar is considered the best actor to have ever graced the Indian silver screen. Undoubtedly, he was quite handsome and left a huge, unmatched legacy in the form of unforgettable movies behind him. But in his heydays, the thespian, as he is also popularly referred to, was also involved in a lot of controversies.

Dilip Kumar was accused of being a Pakistani spy

The Calcutta police had raided the house of Dilip Kumar in 1960 and discovered spy equipment. They also arrested an employee of Dilip Saab’s production company accusing him of being a Pakistani spy. While the majority of reports said that nothing was found there were a few news pieces that claimed that the police had also seen a radio transmitter under his floor.

One of the reasons behind this raid was that Dilip Kumar always maintained very good relations with leaders from Pakistan and even did not return the highest civilian award offered to him by Pakistan despite a lot of criticism.

His personal life also included a few controversies

It is quite well known that Dilip Kumar was in a relationship with Madhubala for a long time but could not get married because the Bollywood superstar rightfully took a stand against Madhu’s father in court. Later on, he married Saira Banu but after a few years of marriage, he married a second time to Asma only to divorce her a couple of years later.

There are rumours that he even proposed to Waheeda Rehman and moved on with Saira Banu without even giving his Dil Diya Dard Liya co-star an intimation or explanation.

What’s more, he also had an affair with Kamini Kaushal but ditched her to move on with someone else.

Controversies with leading ladies

He also had a bad fallout with the leading actress of his times-Vyjayanthimala with whom Dilip Kumar gave many big hits like Naya Daur, Madhumati, and Leader. According to Saira Banu who was instrumental in clearing the differences between Vyajanthimala and Dilip Saab, the former felt that the Devdas actor had got her replaced with Waheeda Rehman in Ram Aur Shyam but in reality, it was not so.

While Suraiya and Dev Anand were very close and wanted to get married at one stage in their lives, Suraiya disliked Dilip Kumar a lot and never showed her eagerness to work with him. According to gossip, Dilip Saab asked K. Asif to cast them together in Janwar. While Suraiya accepted the movie she maintained a distance during the shooting which irked Dilip Kumar a lot. To teach her a lesson, Dilip Kumar devised a special intimate scene with Suraiya taking the director in confidence.

When Suraiya came to know that the scene was not part of the movie and was the plan of Dilip Kumar to get back at her, she vowed never to work with him again. Ditto with Nimmi who was enraged by the actor’s advances and slapped him once during the shooting.

Raaj Kumar and Dilip Kumar worked together in Saudagar. All through the movie the two yesteryear stars had a lot of friction between them. During the shooting of a Holi song, Raaj Saab purposefully threw a fistful of gulaal on the thespian even though he was instructed not to do so. From then on Dilip Kumar never worked with his contemporaries again.
