  • The debacle of Ranveer Singh's 83 seems to be a warning for another lined-up big release.
  • After Shahid Kapoor's Jersey more movies like KGF 2, RRR, Radhe Shyam might get postponed.

Ranveer Singh and Kabir Khan had high expectations from their recent release 83 based on the life of the World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev and India’s historic win in the cricketing world. Unfortunately, the statistics that have come out until now are dismaying.

While two earlier big releases Sooryavanshi and Pushpa: The Rise became superhits, this low response to 83 was unexpected and can definitely affect the next lineup of big movies like Radhe Shyam, KGF 2, RRR, and Prithviraj scheduled to release in 2022.

When Sooryavanshi and Pushpa: The Raj were released, fans were excited to go to the theaters and the response was really huge almost similar to the way Thalapathy Vijay’s Master received at the start of the year in 2021. But at that time the Corona cases were very low and movie fans were very much eager to watch these larger-than-life movies on the big screens in theaters.

So, does the rising cases of Corona have anything to do with 83 performing low at the box office? Critics believe that Coronavirus has nothing to do with the dismal performance of this movie. Because, if that was the case even Spiderman: No Way Home and Pushpa: The Rise might have also got affected. But when these two movies were released, Corona cases were still very much low and the government was not planning to shut down theaters.

Both Pushpa: The Rise and Spiderman: No Way Home were released almost a week before 83 on 17th December and 16th December respectively and thus got a big window. With the New Delhi government announcing the shutting of theaters, Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey has also been postponed. And this certainly is going to affect upcoming big releases like KGF 2, Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam, Rajamouli’s RRR, and Akshay Kumar’s Prithviraj.

The entire world is going through another wave of Coronavirus and a third wave is being predicted in India too. In such a scenario, Prashanth Neel and Yash’s ambitious sequel, which they had confirmed earlier to be released only in theaters, may have to be postponed. The same can be the case with other big releases as the investment in these films is very big and the OTT releases may not be able to turn them into profitable ventures.
