A still from Interstellar
The re-release of Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' has gripped the Indian box office as advance bookings for the film stand set to cross past major re-releases, including the likes of ‘Tumbbad’ and ‘Titanic’. In palpable hype, Bhubaneswar has also dived into the trend, with screenings selling out like hotcakes.
The epic science-fiction drama is set to grace big screens, including IMAX, on February 7, 2025. Re-released worldwide to mark its 10th original release anniversary, the film was originally planned for a December 2024 re-release in India but was postponed due to the overwhelming popularity of Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2.'
Advance bookings across multiplexes in major Indian cities opened more than a month ago, even though tickets for Bhubaneswar screenings opened only on Wednesday, 48 hours before the first screenings. However, the Oscar-winning director's fanbase was such that tickets for most of the shows sold out.

As such, cinemas in Odisha’s state capital opened three additional slots, with as many as six screenings a day from Friday until Sunday. Notably, according to the latest statistics available on ticket booking platforms, all of these are also on the verge of filling up.
Throughout India, the pre-sales figures are staggering. As per box office analysts on X (formerly Twitter), the ‘Interstellar’ re-release in India has already recorded pre-sales of Rs 2.01 crore with over 2,50,000 tickets sold, grossing approximately Rs 8 crore for the opening day.

In comparison, the recently re-released 'Tumbbad' witnessed significant success with 33,000 tickets sold for its first day. However, Nolan’s film has surpassed these numbers, achieving 252% higher pre-sales. Additionally, it stands set to surpass Thalapathy Vijay's 'Ghilli,’ which holds the record for the highest opening for a re-release in India, through advance bookings alone.
On the same note, ‘Interstellar’ is set to outperform other Hollywood re-releases like 'Titanic,' which grossed Rs 20 crore in its re-run in India. Moreover, it is also expected to dominate the box office despite competition from domestic releases like 'Badass Ravikumar' and 'Loveyapa.'
It is worth mentioning that as of Thursday morning, the ‘Interstellar’ re-release in Odisha has been listed only in select cinemas of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
