  • Biopics in Bollywood are more often fictionalized to woo the audience.
  • From Dangal to Neerja, creators showed many incidences that were far away from the truth.

Biopic has been the major source of content for Bollywood. While a few were quite authentic, most of the biopics tried to escalate the real-life incidences into melodrama to ensure that they touch a chord with the audience and bring more moolah to the box office.

And, while doing so, some of the biggest hits based on real-life stories have simply strayed away from reality with the climax or the storyline betraying the truth in totality.

The Dirty Picture

The movie was based on the life of the Southern queen of the vamp, Silk Smitha, and was brought alive on the screen by Vidya Balan. To date, it remains one of the highest earners of Vidya’s career. But for reasons unknown, the people behind The Dirty Picture decided to change the climax of the film.

The movie shows Vidya dying due to an overdose of sleeping pills while in truth, Silk Smitha committed suicide by hanging herself to the ceiling.

Mary Kom

There have been many controversies and discussions related to Mary Kom. Many believed that someone from North East India should have been roped in to play the role of the Indian boxer. Even Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who portrayed Mary Kom on the screen, had accepted this fact. Apart from that, the creators also changed a few facts from the life of the boxer to woo the audience. The movie shows Mary Kom doing street boxing for money however in reality she never fought for money.

Secondly, in real life, her father was supportive of her interest in boxing whereas the movie shows him opposing her vehemently. Also, the movie shows Mary Kom fighting in the boxing ring while her son is undergoing an operation, but this scene is completely out of context and fictional.

Neerja

It is a common Bollywood tendency that if it is a biopic the lead character is enhanced to such an extent that he is almost equal to God. While Neerja played by Sonam Kapoor did depict the true story of the crew and passengers on Pan Am flight 73, many believed that the role of Sonam as Neerja Bhanot was exaggerated and that other crew members also fought courageously to save the passengers.

M.S Dhoni: The Untold Story

Going by the movie, Priyanka Jha was the reason why Dhoni became a successful cricketer and captain and that he met her on a flight when he was going to Pakistan for a One Day Series. But in reality, Dhoni had met Priyanka much before that in 2002.

Dangal

The movie showed that Geeta and Babita started wrestling after hitting eve-teasers. But in reality, their father Mahavir Singh Phogat was inspired by Karnam Malleswari and had decided to train his daughters as wrestlers even before that. Similarly, the coach of Geeta PR Sodhi in reality always appreciated the efforts of Mahavir Singh Phogat but in the movie, he has been presented as the negative character.
