Significantly, it's the dense foggy conditions that is further aggravating the smog situation in the aforesaid districts. As per the forecast by IMD and ECMWF, the dense foggy conditions will engulf the above eight districts till Monday. However, foggy weather is predicted to prevail in Odisha till December 19, but will remain limited to few places in southern districts alone.

The word "smog" is a combination of the words "smoke" and "fog." And Smog is a mixture of many pollutants, mainly ground level ozone and fine particulate matters (PM2.5).

"Smog with PM pollutants have a very harmful impact on people with respiratory disorders like Acute Respiratory Syndrome (ARI). Exposure to smog for a prolonged duration may increase mortalities related to the respiratory diseases, " warned Dr PC Sahoo, former CDMO at Capital Hospital.

As per the data available with State Health Department, Odisha records 18-23 lakh Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) cases per year. And the ARI fatalities hover in the range of 50-110 per year. Data shows the State records nearly 2-3 deaths every 10 days during a year.
