Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna is all set to make his Telugu film debut in Mahakali, the first-ever female-led superhero film from the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU).

Known for his recent performance in Chhaava, Khanna will play a significant role in this high-octane franchise expansion.

Major Role in Expanding Superhero Universe

Sources close to the production have confirmed Khanna's involvement, though specifics about his character remain under wraps. Whether he emerges as a hero, a villain, or something in between, insiders suggest that his role will be pivotal to the evolving storyline of the PVCU.

Behind-the-Scenes Progress

Currently in pre-production, Mahakali is being helmed by director Puja Aparna Kolluru, with creator Prasanth Varma closely supervising casting and creative development. According to a source quoted by Hindustan Times, "Prasanth is particular about who he wants to cast as the lead because this will be his first female superhero, and it requires a certain charm while challenging beauty standards."

The film is expected to go on floors soon, once the casting and logistics are finalised.

What is the PVCU?

The Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe launched with HanuMan in 2023, a film inspired by the mythological figure Lord Hanuman, featuring Teja Sajja in the lead. Following its success, a sequel titled Jai Hanuman, starring Rishab Shetty, is currently in development.

Mahakali, inspired by the fierce goddess Kali, will mark the third chapter in the PVCU. The universe is also expanding to include Adhira, with Dasari Kalyan playing a character based on Lord Indra, and an untitled film led by Mokshagna Teja.

Khanna's Strategic Career Move

Akshaye Khanna’s upcoming ventures reflect a calculated diversification of his filmography. Following his intense portrayal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Chhaava, where his performance was praised for its gravitas and restraint, Khanna is now stepping into the expansive world of South Indian cinema. His portrayal in Chhaava drew acclaim for bringing nuance to a historical figure, with critics lauding his balanced command of power and emotion.
