Aamir Khan describes Lagaan as a 'very scary project,' Amitabh Bachchan warned 'film would flop'!
Bollywood's Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan and his iconic film Lagaan proved to be a game-changer for Indian cinema. The sports drama became a massive critical and commercial success. Khan, who played the lead character of Bhuvan in this Ashutosh Gowariker film, received several awards and nominations for his powerful character portrayal. However, Aamir Khan describes this cinematic masterpiece as a 'very scary' project. Even renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar and Millennium Star Amitabh Bachchan warned Khan that the 'film would flop'.
During a recent conversation with India Today, Aamir Khan described Lagaan as a 'very scary' project to undertake. His concerns for the movie escalated when Javed Akhtar called him and said, "Why are you making this film? This will not work."
Further, Akhtar also listed out several reasons why he believed that the movie would flop. Khan recalled Akhtar highlighting the reasons- sports films rarely succeeded, cricket-themed movies had never clicked, and using Awadhi as the language of the film would alienate the audience. Akhtar also stated that Bollywood was embracing glamorous foreign locations and high-fashion costumes, while Lagaan was set in a rustic village with actors clad in dhotis.
Further escalating the worries of Khan, Akhtar added that Amitabh Bachchan's involvement as a narrator was a bad omen.
Khan recalled, "He (Javed Akhtar) said, ‘Every film Mr. Bachchan has narrated so far has flopped. And now that you’ve brought him in, it’s confirmed—your film won’t work.'"
Moreover, Bachchan also shared similar thoughts. When Khan approached Big B for the voiceover, the Paa actor said, "I’ll do it, I don’t mind. But just so you know, every film I have narrated has flopped. So, you better be aware of that."
Well, despite the warnings and his 'fear', Aamir Khan dared to do the film. And the rest is history. Lagaan was India's official entry for the Academy Awards in 2002 and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
