  • Vidya Balan and Sujay Ghosh's Kahaani completes 10 years today.
  • The Dirty Picture actress prepared elaborately to look convincing as a pregnant software engineer from London.

For Vidya Balan, Kahaani was a landmark movie in her career. And even for Sujay Ghosh, it was the film that gave him recognition in Bollywood. But for young Vidya, who had never been pregnant, to play the role of Vidya Bagchi who comes to Kolkata to search for her missing hubby Arnab Bagchi was a bit challenging.

It was an intriguing tale, full of suspense and mystery and a very different role for Vidya. Nevertheless, she gave her 100% to this role of a London-returned software engineer.

To look convincing as a pregnant woman in Kahaani, Vidya took tips from her sister Priya who coincidentally was pregnant at that time. Hence, she minutely observed her mannerisms, mood swings, and movements, That is how Vidya convincingly managed to make the audience believe that she was pregnant with the way she walked and behaved.

Incidentally, even though right from the beginning The Dirty Picture actress is shown as a would-be-mother, the climax shows that she is in fact just acting as a pregnant woman.

Another important part of her character as Vidya Bagchi was to portray a London-returned software engineer. For that, she met a few people and doctors in London and tried to grasp the nuances of their mannerisms.

Earlier in an interview, Sujay Ghosh had said that he had left the preparation up to Vidya and she was quite thorough and elaborate with it. He also revealed that the actress had made a dos and don’ts list of a pregnant woman and also a list of superstitions.

She would sleep for only 2 hours and still look fresh and beautiful during the shoot. She even shifted to eating “Grandmother’s Salad” during the shooting of Kahaani. The movie was loved by the audience and earned a Filmfare for Vidya and Sujay for best actress and best director respectively. It also won 5 National Awards and was remade in Telugu as Anaamika. The role of Vidya was played by Tollywood queen Nayanthara.
