9 years ago Sushant Singh Rajput made his Bollywood debut with Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che! which also starred Rajkumarr Rao and Amit Sadh in important roles. Incidentally, it was also the debut movie for Amit and Rao. While Sush is no more, Amit is doing well on the OTT platforms whereas Rajkumarr Rao has now gained a strong foothold in the entertainment industry.

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s Novel

The movie is about three friends and is based on a novel titled “Three Mistakes of my Life” by Chetan Bhagat. It was released in 2013 in India. With three newcomers leading the movie, it surprisingly did well at the box office and was declared a hit. It was made out of a budget of Rs 25 crores and earned close to Rs 92 crores across India.

First Indian Movie to Feature in World Panorama Section

Kai Po Che! had a world premiere at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival on February 13 almost 10 days ahead of its release in India. It became the first Indian movie to make an entry in the World Panorama section.

Six Filmfare Nominations

The movie received 6 Filmfare nominations including a nomination for Sushant Singh Rajput in the best debut section.

Kai Po Che! Started Trend of Sports Drama in Bollywood

After the surprising success of this movie, more producers started investing in projects that promoted biopics of sportspeople or were based on stories with sports as background. In a way, the seeds of a bigger biopic of MS Dhoni in which SSR played the lead role were sown in the success of Kai Po Che!

The Title of the Movie is in Gujarati

Kai Po Che! is a Gujarati phrase that means “I have cut the kite” and is a common line in areas where people love flying kites. To make sure that the cultural ethos of Gujarat is captured in reality, Abhishek Kapoor shot most part of the movie in Gujarat in places like Porbandar, old Ahmadabad, Vadnagar, and more.
