Be it Simran or Raj, or “Ja Simran Jee Le Apani Zindagi” there are so many moments in DDLJ that have stayed with the audience to date.

Not SRK but Aditya wanted Tom Cruise as Raj

DDLJ was Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut and hence he was dreaming very big. He wanted to cast Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise as Raj. However, Aditya’s father Yash Chopra who helmed the YRF banner at that time turned down this idea and since Shah Rukh Khan had formed a strong bond with Chopra after Darr, the role finally went to him.

Kirron Kher gave a title to the movie

The name Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was given by Anupam Kher ’s wife Kirron Kher. As is known Anupam played an important role in the movie and in between discussions Kirron suggested the name. Surprisingly, SRK did not approve of the name but Aditya Chopra loved it and very few people know that he has even given credit for the same to the veteran actress in the opening titles.

Some iconic scenes were spontaneous

In the song “Ruk Ja Oh Dil Deewane” there is a moment when Raj drops Simran to the ground. While Shah Rukh Khan was aware of what he needed to do, Kajol was kept in the dark because Adi wanted to capture a spontaneous expression on her face.

Similarly, the much-remembered pigeon feeding scene between Shah Rukh and Amrish Puri happened instantly on the spot and was developed by SRK right at the moment.

Adi was with Raj and Simran all through Zurich

Some of the most romantic scenes between Raj and Simran were shot in Zurich. So keen was Aditya Chopra to make sure that the scenes turned out as he had envisioned them that all through the journey he laid across the backseat in SRK’s cherry red convertible.

Kajol was unsure about shooting the song in the towel

Kajol’s “Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye” song was a bold move in those days as its few scenes were shot in just a towel. Actually, the actress was a bit hesitant in doing that song but it has turned out really well. Interestingly, Aditya had asked Manish Malhotra to cut the skirt of Kajol in the song on the spot because he thought it was too long.
