Facial recognition
In a pioneering move to bolster examination security, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) successfully conducted a Proof of Concept (PoC) for Aadhaar-based face authentication during the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2025 in New Delhi. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the National Testing Agency (NTA), marks the first deployment of facial biometric authentication in one of India's most competitive entrance examinations.
The PoC aimed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of real-time face authentication using Aadhaar's biometric database to verify candidate identities in a contactless manner. During the trial, the technology was deployed at select NEET examination centres in Delhi, seamlessly integrating with NIC’s digital infrastructure and NTA’s examination protocols.
Candidates' live facial images were captured and matched against their Aadhaar records, eliminating the need for physical interaction. This process not only streamlined verification but also enhanced hygiene and efficiency. Officials reported a high degree of accuracy and operational efficiency, validating the technology’s potential for broader, nationwide implementation in the future.
The successful pilot reflects the government's commitment to leveraging digital innovation to improve transparency and security in public services. It also showcases the potential of Aadhaar face authentication as a secure, scalable, and student-friendly solution for identity verification in large-scale examinations. The initiative is seen as a significant step towards curbing impersonation and fraud in high-stakes exams.
NEET UG 2025 was conducted on May 4, with over 22 lakh candidates appearing across more than 5,400 centres in India and 14 cities abroad. The use of advanced biometric verification was among various measures deployed to ensure security and prevent malpractice amid growing concerns about exam integrity.
The success of this PoC may pave the way for the adoption of facial authentication in other national-level examinations, further strengthening the integrity of India's examination system.
