This is the first time the NTA has held the national-level test during this period. The exam, which facilitates admission to PhD programs, awards Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), and appoints assistant professors, is being conducted from January 3 to January 16 for 85 subjects in the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

On January 15, exam was scheduled to be conducted in 17 disciplines, such as mass communication and journalism, Sanskrit, Nepali, law, Japanese, women's studies, Malayalam, Urdu, Konkani, criminology, folk literature, electronic science, environmental science, and Indian knowledge systems.

Last year, UGC-NET too was rescheduled due to several apprehensions expressed by the Education Ministry over the 'integrity of the examination process'.
