UGC Extends Applicability Of PhD As Mandatory Qualification For Asst Professor Posts

Earlier, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had said that Ph.D will not be mandatory for recruitment of Assistant Professors due to Covid-19 pandemic, but only for the time being.

UGC Extends Applicability Of PhD As Mandatory Qualification For Asst Professor Posts

The University Grants Commission (UGC), in view of the COVID-19 situation, has decided to extend the date of applicability of Ph.D. as a mandatory qualification for direct recruitment of Assistant Professors in Departments of Universities from July 1, 2021 to July 1, 2023.

In a notification, the UGC said, "UGC (The Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education Regulations, 2018) stipulates that Ph.D. degree shall be mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant professors in universities from 01.07.2021."

"The UGC, in view of COVID-19 pandemic, has decided to extend the date of applicability of Ph.D. as mandatory qualification for direct recruitment of Assistant professors from 01.07.2021 to 01.07.2023," the notification read.

"Accordingly, an Amendment to the aforesaid Regulations has been notified in the Gazette on 11.10.2021," the notification added.
