The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities and colleges to implement the guidelines for Gender Champions.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of lndia has come out with a badge for Gender Champion which is available on its website and also on My Govt portal.

In its letter, the UGC has clarified that Gender Champions can be both boys and girls above 16 years of age enrolled in educational institutions.

“Gender Champions are envisaged as responsible leaders who will facilitate an enabling environment within their schools/colleges/academic institutions where girls are treated with dignity and respect,” the UGC letter read.

ln order to promote gender equality, guaranteed by Article 15 of the Constitution, there is a need to change the mode of interaction at all levels- home, school, college, University, workplace, and so on.

In another development, the UGC has also asked the educational institutions to ensure that Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) works as per UGC (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of sexual Harassment of women employees and students' in Higher Education lnstitutions) Regulations, 2015.

The UGC has also directed the universities and colleges to fill up the online compliance details of Gender Champions and Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) at at saksham.ugc.ac.in.
