Stern action against private schools, colleges violating summer heat SOP: Odisha Minister

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Odisha's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister warns private institutions flouting summer SOPs. Strict actions will be taken for violations to ensure student safety in rising temperatures.

Odisha Warns Stern Action Against Private Schools, Colleges

In the wake of the intensifying summer heat wave across Odisha, the Odisha government has taken serious note of the precautionary measures being flouted by certain private educational institutions. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Friday issued a stern warning to private schools and colleges, directing them to strictly adhere to the government-issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aimed at protecting students from the scorching temperatures.

Stick To SOP Or Face Action

The minister cautioned that any school or college found operating in violation of the SOP will face strict disciplinary and legal action. He emphasized that the SOP was put in place considering the health and safety of students and staff, especially amid reports of rising temperatures in multiple districts.

“Institutions opening in defiance of the SOP will not be spared. Action will be taken without hesitation,” he said.

The Odisha government has already announced summer vacation for all schools and colleges to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat. However, reports suggest that a few private institutions are continuing to function despite the directive, prompting the latest warning from the government.

The Minister further stated that the situation related to the heat wave is currently under control, but vigilance and preventive measures remain essential. The Odisha government has taken all necessary steps to combat the summer heat. The situation is being constantly monitored,” he assured.

The Minister also appealed to the general public to avoid stepping out of their homes unless absolutely necessary, especially during peak daytime hours. Vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions have been advised to take extra precautions.

To bolster the healthcare system’s preparedness, Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the state have been instructed to keep ‘heatstroke wards’ ready. These specialized wards will be equipped to provide emergency medical care in the event of sunstroke or heat-related illnesses.

The Odisha government had earlier circulated detailed SOPs which included suspending classes during extreme heat, ensuring availability of drinking water and ORS in public places, and awareness campaigns across schools and communities.

The minister reiterated that student safety is non-negotiable, and private institutions must show responsibility and solidarity in following the government’s heat wave guidelines.

“This is not just about rules; it’s about protecting lives. The government will not tolerate negligence in this matter,” he concluded.
As the mercury continues to soar, the onus lies equally on authorities and citizens to remain vigilant and act responsibly to ensure public health and safety in the days ahead.
