Never in his wildest dreams had Kushal Dan, a small-time tea vendor, had imagined that he would become the father of an IAS officer. Due to financial hardships, Kushal would take loans and borrow money from friends and relatives for his son’s education. All through his life, Kushal only knew of tears of pain and struggle.

However, his son Deshal Dan Charan gave him the ‘tears of joy’ by clearing UPSC with AIR-82, that too on his very first attempt. Hailing from a small village of Sumalai in Rajasthan to becoming one of India’s top IAS officers, the life story of IAS Deshal Dan Charan is nothing short of a remarkable and very inspiring one.

Born in a family of ten, Charan’s father sold tea to make ends meet for the family. Charan was intelligent from childhood and a quick learner. He followed his elder brother who excelled academically. After his intermediate, his elder brother was picked for the Indian Navy.

However, the family was shattered after he was martyred in a submarine accident when Charan was studying in Class 10.

Despite being disheartened, he focused on his studies and effortlessly cracked JEE to get admission to IIT Jabalpur.

After passing out from IIT Jabalpur, he could have easily got a well-paying job in some top MNC. However, he decided to sit for the Civil Services Exam which was his childhood dream. He moved to Delhi and started his preparation.

He studied day and night to make his dream come true. He knew his father could not afford for his education, so he had to work harder than other aspirants.

Finally, his hard work paid off and he cracked the UPSC with AIR-82 to become an IAS. He was only 24 when he aced the test and was placed among the year’s top scrorers.
