The Odisha government on Thursday announced that the physical teaching for classes 1 to 6 students in the State will start from February 28.

Though the schools were earlier asked to reopen from February 14, the government today stated that students will be allowed to attend classrooms from February 28. However, on-line teachings will continue as before.

The move comes in the backdrop of reports from various district Collectors who had sought additional time for undertaking cleaning, bush cutting, minor repairs and ensuring clean environment for the small children.

It is pertinent to mention here that these schools had remained closed for nearly two years following the outbreak of Covid-19 in March 2020.

In a letter, the School and Mass Education department has also stated that the election process for Panchayati Raj Institutions is currently underway. As most of the polling personnel consist of teaching and non-teaching staff of school and education department, they are undergoing training and engaged in other related election works at present.

As several school campuses will be used as polling stations which will witness heavy movement of polling personnel, including Police and general public including voters, this may pose risk of Covid-19 infection among the small children.

“The schools for Standard/ Class-I to VII which was scheduled to start from February 14 are allowed to open from the said date and students may not come to school. They can attend to online classes. However, all the Teachers should come to school and ensure thorough cleaning and sanitization of the campus. The students should come to attend physical classes from February 28,” the notification read.
