With the admission process gradually gaining momentum after a long hiatus on account of the Covid-19 pandemic situation, which adversely affected the academic session, the Odisha government on Thursday issued an important notification regarding hostel accommodation of the students.

In a letter to the registrars of all State Public Universities and principals of Government Degree Colleges, the State Higher Education Department has directed to provide hostel accommodation to the students pursuing regular courses on ‘priority’ basis.

The notification comes in the backdrop of reports that some Universities and Colleges in the State are providing hostel facility to the students of various Self-Financing courses (SFCs) at the cost of regular students.

Saswat Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Odisha government in a letter categorically stated that, “This practice should be stopped forthwith.”

In his letter, Mishra further wrote, “Hostel facilities should be provided to students of regular courses on priority basis. Only after accommodating students of all regular courses desirous of staying in hostel, if some hostel seats still remain vacant, then the students of self-financing courses may be considered against those vacancies.”
