Minister Nityanand Gond
Despite the Odisha government's clear directive to shut schools in view of the intense summer heat wave, it has been alleged that several private schools continue to operate in violation of the guidelines. This disregard for official orders and student safety has prompted serious concern within the state’s Education Department.
The Department of School and Mass Education had earlier issued a state-wide advisory mandating the closure of all schools to protect children from the extreme heat conditions sweeping across the state. However, complaints have surfaced from various regions indicating that some private institutions are still conducting classes, ignoring both the Odisha government’s directive and the health risks posed to students.
Reacting to these violations, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond expressed strong disapproval
“We are taking this matter very seriously. The Department is actively investigating the complaints, and if any school is found flouting the rules, stringent action will be taken,” the Minister said.
An enquiry has already been initiated by the Mass Education department to identify such schools. Authorities have been instructed to monitor and report any breaches promptly. The Minister further emphasized that the health and well-being of children are of utmost importance and cannot be compromised for academic schedules or commercial interests.
“Keeping in view the heat wave conditions, the Odisha government had announced the closure of educational institutions so that the students are protected. If any private schools violate government guidelines, and if any mishap happens, they will be held accountable. The state government will review such allegations and take stern action against the schools violating the government order,” the Minister said.
The Odisha government’s warning comes amid rising temperatures and multiple heat wave alerts issued by the Meteorological Department. In such conditions, prolonged exposure, especially for young children, can lead to severe dehydration, heatstroke, or other health complications.
Officials reiterated that the heat wave directive is not merely advisory but mandatory, and all schools—government or private—must comply without exception. The government has urged parents and guardians to report any such violations to local authorities to ensure swift intervention.
With student health at stake, the administration has made it clear that it will not hesitate to take disciplinary and legal action against schools that continue to ignore safety norms.
