With absenteeism of thousands of students in the matriculation examination raising serious concern, the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha on Saturday said its responsibility is only limited to issuance of admit cards and conduct of examinations.

"It is not our fault as our job is to issue admit cards of all those who fill up forms for the matriculation examination and conduct examinations. We do not have any system to verify whether genuine or dummy candidates are filling up the forms,” said BSE President Ramasish Hazra.

“The School and Mass Education Department will look into it as we don't have any system to verify the genuineness of the applicants," Hazra said.

Asked about the number of absentees in Class 10 Summative-2 examinations which concluded today, Hajra said, “We can tell the exact figure once the answer booklets reach the headquarters from the nodal centres.”

This year, thousands of students reportedly remained absent during the Class 10 Summative 2 examinations after filling up the forms, raising concerns among educationists.

Yesterday, the State School and Mass Education Department secretary Bishnupada Sethi attributed the absenteeism of students to various reasons.

Refuting the allegations of any forgery, Sethi said students might have opted out of the Matric exam due to various reasons and the department will look into the matter.
