Cycle mechanic to IAS officer, remarkable journey of Varun Baranwal

From working as a cycle mechanic to feed his family after his father’s death to becoming an IAS officer, the remarkable journey of Varun Baranwal is not only inspiring but is also a source of hope and inspiration for many.

There are hundreds of aspirants, who are currently battling personal losses, financial problems, and going through tough times. This story of IAS Varun Baranwal is for those who are broken or losing hope.

Hailing from the remote village of Boisar in Maharashtra, Varun’s father ran a small bicycle repair shop. Varun’s family survived on whatever his father made as a bicycle mechanic. However, the situation turned worse for the family after his father passed away, leaving Varun to fend for the family.

With no other option, Varun decided to give up his studies and run his father’s mechanic shop. However, as luck would have it, Varun passed his Class X with good marks due to which his mother forced him to continue his studies.

However, he could not enroll in Class II as he had no money. Fortunately, the doctor who had provided medical care for his father offered to pay Rs 10,000 for Varun. He always wanted to become a doctor but had to give up on his dream as studying medicine would have been expensive.

Instead, he preferred to go for engineering and worked really hard to obtain a scholarship after being into MIT College, Pune. With his hard work and dedication, he finally got a placement in a top MNC.

However, his experiences of poverty had given him a dream of becoming an IAS officer. That’s how he started his UPSC journey. Even after working in the MNC, he took time out and started collecting books and notes for his preparation.

He approached NGOS for books and reading material and depended solely on them for his preparation. With no money for coaching in top institutes, old notes and books were his only source of knowledge.

Finally, his hard work paid off and he secured an AIR-32 in the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2016.
