CBSE allows Class 10 basic math students to opt for standard math in class 11 for 2025-26 session

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

CBSE allows Class 10 students with Basic Math to opt for Standard Math in Class 11 from the 2025-26 session, subject to institutional approval.

CBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students who studied Basic Mathematics (code 241) in Class 10 during the 2024–25 academic session will be permitted to opt for Mathematics (Standard) (code 041) in Class 11 for the academic session 2025–26 onwards.

Two Levels of Mathematics Introduced in 2020

As per CBSE circular No. Acad-03/2019 dated January 10, 2019, the board introduced two levels of Mathematics from the academic session ending March 2020. Mathematics (Standard) is intended for students who wish to pursue the subject at the Senior Secondary level and beyond. Mathematics (Basic) was designed for those not inclined to continue with Mathematics after Class 10.

Originally, students who chose Basic Mathematics in Class 10 were allowed to study only Applied Mathematics in Class 11. However, CBSE had provided a special exemption during earlier sessions, allowing students of Basic Mathematics to opt for Mathematics (041) in Class 11 and 12 due to the pandemic and related challenges.

CBSE Policy for 2025–26 Onwards

The board has now decided to continue this relaxation for the 2025–26 academic session and beyond. Students who offered Basic Mathematics (241) in Class 10 can now take Mathematics (041) in Class 11, provided the head of the institution is satisfied with the student’s aptitude and ability to handle the subject's rigour.

CBSE has also clarified that once a subject is entered into the List of Candidates (LOC), no changes will be permitted later. Schools are advised to inform parents and students about this development to ensure appropriate decision-making.

This policy will remain in effect until a new scheme of studies is implemented as per the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). All other provisions from circular No. Acad-03/2019 will remain unchanged.
