Carrom game dispute led to Cuttack businessman’s murder amid Holi festivity: DCP

The murder of a businessman during Holi festivities in Bayalis Mouza locality of Cuttack district on Saturday was due to a dispute over carrom game, revealed DCP-Cuttack Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo on Sunday.

Speaking to media, the top cop said that, the deceased, identified as Bikash Mohanty, was shot dead at a rented house in Shreekrishna Vihar, where five friends had gathered to celebrate Holi.

According to DCP Khilari, Mohanty was playing carrom with his friends when an argument broke out with Prakash Sutar over a minor dispute. The situation escalated, and in a fit of rage, Sutar retrieved a gun from his house and shot Bikash from point-blank.

Other friends present at the scene overpowered Sutar and informed the police. Law enforcement, along with a forensic team, seized the weapon and arrested the accused. Police are now investigating the source of the firearm and whether any deeper conspiracy was involved in the killing.

“Sutar, the accused, hails from Pattamundai of Kendrapara district. He along with other friends had consumed alcohol and was playing carrom amid Holi festivity. An altercation between Sutar and Mohanty broke out after water spilled on the carrom board. In a fit of rage, Sutar shot Mohanty from a very close range causing his death on the spot,” the DCP informed.

Spike in Crime on Holi

Earlier yesterday, two youths were stabbed to death in Bhubaneswar. Similarly, one youth in Sambalpur, a contractor in Berhampur and a youth in Angul were stabbed to death during Holi celebrations.
