Odisha continues to report a steep surge in Covid-19 cases, recording above 500 new infections over the last couple of days. The State’s number of active cases on Tuesday rose to over 3,000.

However, most of the patients do not show any symptoms. While more than 3,000 people are reported to have tested positive, only 31 have been admitted to hospitals. 25 among them are in the ICU after their condition worsened. The remaining six are admitted to general wards with no major symptoms.

The highest number of cases is mostly reported from urban areas like Cuttack, Puri, and Khordha. In a sigh of relief for villagers, rural areas reported less number of cases.

“As of now, the number of people admitted to hospitals is very less. Just 1% of the affected people have been admitted to hospitals till now. Out of 3000 patients, only 31 have been admitted to hospitals. So, it is safe to say that most of the patients show no symptoms or show mild symptoms. Most of the elderly persons are admitted now,” said Director of Public Health Dr. Niranjan Mishra.

Speaking on the rise in Covid-19 cases, Mishra said, “Only a few states like Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal and urban cities like Pune, Mumbai have reported the spike in Covid-19 cases. There has been not much Covid-19 rise in rural areas.”

Meanwhile, the continued COVID-19 surge in the Capital City has prompted Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to issue fresh guidelines for malls, street food vendors and other business establishments asking them to prevent crowding and ensure other COVID safety norms.

The civic body has advised all business establishments including shopping malls to check overcrowding and maintain social distancing of 6 feet. They were also asked to make face masks mandatory for all the staff and customers at all times.
