A group of vendors in Ganjam district have come forward to offer discounts to double vaccinated customers in a bid to promote the ongoing vaccination drive against the Covid-19. 

The Hinjilicut Municipality has started the initiative which is aimed at encouraging Covid-19 vaccination. Now, the fully vaccinated people can avail the discount in 10 stores under the municipality.

While grocery shops are presently offering the discounts, it will be extended to other shops also in coming days. The shopkeepers ask customers if they have been vaccinated or not. If the customer/s produced the proof of vaccination of both doses, 5 per cent discount is given on the overall purchase amount.

A customer said the initiative will lure people to take jabs, thus help strengthening the inoculation drive.  

“I purchased some grocery items. As I have received both doses of vaccine, the shopkeeper offered me 5 per cent discount. I showed him the document of my vaccination. My overall bill amount was Rs 400 and I got Rs 20 discount,” said Niranjan Panigrahi, a customer.  

P Suresh Kumar Patra, a trader,  said, “Vaccination will protect us from the virus and lead to normalcy. Though we have been suffering losses, our initiative will encourage people to take vaccine.”

The municipality authorities had envisaged the innovative idea to encourage people under the municipality and nearby areas to get vaccinated and put forth the proposal before the traders. As the traders agreed to it, the process has been started for the past two days.

The hoteliers and garment traders also promised to extend the offer after the lockdown norms are relaxed. However, the officer is valid once per vaccination certificate. The offer will be valid for home delivery and online purchases during lockdown only. 

Dr Manoranjan Sahu, executive officer, Hinjilicut Municipality, said, “So far 10 shops have participated in it. The second dose vaccination started yesterday. Let’s see how many people are getting vaccinated.”
