Puri: A youth was arrested on the charges of abusing and attacking an on-duty policeman during weekend shutdown at Balanga area in the district on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as one Ajay Pradhan.

According to reports, Balanga police was on patrolling duty during the weekend shutdown when a police team apprehended Pradhan riding a bicycle with a bunch of bananas.

Pradhan had no mask and he was found flouting COVID norms by going out during a State enforced shutdown. When a policeman on duty asked him about the reason of not wearing a mask, he argued with the cop. During the course of the argument, Pradhan lost his temper and hurled abuses at the cop. He also attacked the policeman with a sharp weapon he was carrying with him.

 

The policeman sustained serious injuries and he was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital. The errant youth has been arrested.

“The accused has past criminal records. He had assaulted an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the police station in the past. A case has been registered in the police station and further investigation into the matter is underway,” said Balanga Police Station IIC Samarendra Paikaray.
