Odisha steps up vigil, containment measures amid COVID-19 resurgence

In view of rising COVID-19 cases across the country, Odisha has swiftly initiated preventive and containment measures to curb the spread of infection. As of 6 June 2025, a total of 755 samples have been tested in the state, with 38 individuals confirmed COVID-19 positive.

Encouragingly, 9 of these individuals have already recovered and resumed normalcy, while the remaining patients are in home isolation and reported to be clinically stable.

To strengthen preparedness and align with national strategies, a high-level virtual meeting was convened on 3 June 2025, chaired by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW).

The deliberations focused on surveillance, early detection, home isolation protocols, and data sharing. Following the discussions, the Government of India released a press note outlining unified recommendations, which the Odisha government is actively implementing.

Healthcare Preparedness:

- States have been instructed to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines.
- A mock drill assessing oxygen supply systems (PSA plants, LMO tanks, MGPS lines) was conducted on 2nd June 2025.
- Facility-level preparedness mock drills are planned for 4th and 5th June 2025.

Surveillance:

- State and District surveillance units under IDSP are closely monitoring Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).
- Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5% of ILI cases as per guidelines.
- Positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network.

Public Advisory:

- The public is advised to practice hand hygiene, cough etiquette, and avoid crowded places when unwell.
- Individuals with acute respiratory illness should self-monitor and seek medical care if symptoms worsen.
- Trusted sources such as MoHFW’s website and PIB releases should be followed to avoid misinformation and rumors.
