As many as 604 children in the 0-18 age group have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past five days in Odisha. It is being predicted that children and adolescents may bear the brunt during the possible third wave of Covid-19 pandemic.

The State on Thursday detected 1,041 more cases of Covid-19 and 68 fatalities due to the virus which took the positive tally to 9,98,187 and death toll to 7,154.

As per the data revealed by the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department, 128 out of 1,041 persons reported to be infected during the last 24 hours were in the age group of 0-18 group.

Since Sunday (August 15), out of 4,680 people who have tested positive for Coronavirus, a total of 604 infected cases were in the 0-18 age group which accounted for 12.9 percent.

Of the fresh cases reported today, 605 are from quarantine centres, while the rest 436 are local contact cases. Khordha district reported the highest 398 cases in the last 24 hours while Cuttack remained second in the list with 176  infections, as per State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department.

Other districts which reported cases below 100 are- Jajpur (56), Jagatsinghpur (43), Kendrapara (37), Mayurbhanj (36), Puri (34), Angul (29), Balasore (22), Dhenkanal (15), Bhadrak (15), Sundargarh (13), Nayagarh (13), Keonjhar (12), Sambalpur (9), Deogarh (7), Bargarh (7), Rayagada (5), Ganjam (5), Kalahandi (4), Nabarangpur (3), Malkangiri (3), Koraput (2), Kandhamal (2), Bolangir (2), Sonepur (1), Nuapada (1), Jharsuguda (1), Gajapati (1) and Boudh (1).

In terms of deaths, Cuttack reported the maximum 18 fatalities followed by Jagatsinghpur (10), Khordha (7) and Dhenkanal (6). While Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj five deaths each, Angul reported four deaths, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Balasore districts saw three deaths each, Ganjam two deaths and Nayagarh and Sundargarh districts reported one death each.

Odisha currently has 9,664 active cases while 9,81,316 patients have recovered so far, including 845 on Wednesday.

The State has so far tested over 1,72,08,248 samples for Covid-19, including 69,008 in the last 24 hours. Odisha's positivity rate stands at 1.44 per cent.
