Bhubaneswar: Amid Covid-19 scare, Odisha on Monday reported the first case of Mucoromycosis or Black Fungus in a Covid-19 positive patient at a private hospital in the State Capital.

According to State Health Department, a 71-year-old man from Jajpur presently residing in Bhubaneswar has been infected with the rare disease.

His throat swab was taken on April 18 and the test report came on April 20 found him positive for Covid-19. He was in home isolation thereafter. On May 8, his eyes swelled and he reported blackish discharge from nose. 

After Nasal endoscopy, it is revealed that he has some black deposits on turbinate, according to a statement of ENT surgeon Dr Radha Madhab Sahu.

The man, who has uncontrolled diabetes, has been admitted to the hospital today and his condition is stated to be stable.

Notably, the serious infection is being widely reported among COVID-19 survivors in the country.

According to health experts, the infection is very rare but fatal. But, if treated early, it is curable and is not contagious.
