Odisha Health Department on Saturday sent an epidemiology team to observe and examine the health condition of the Covid-19 infected person from Deogarh, who happens to be the first case of Delta Plus variant in the State. Delta Plus is a new mutant version of the SARS-CoV-2 first detected in India.

According to the health department sources, contact tracing of the infected person has been carried out diligently. Their health conditions and their vaccination status will also be examined thoroughly by the team.

“The infected person from Deogarh had taken the jab on March 30. He got infected in the next month after coming in contact with another Covid patient. However, he was asymptomatic due to the effect of vaccination. His entire genome has been sequenced and he has fully recovered,” said health director Bijay Mohapatra.

“The infected person and all others, who had come in contact with him, are under observation for six weeks. The epidemiology team will examine all of their health conditions. We could know about the effect of the new variant on patients from the observation,” said Mohapatra.

Delta plus, said to be a variant with increased transmissibility, is the latest in the long list of new mutant forms of the Delta strain of the virus which had largely been blamed for fuelling second wave of the pandemic in India. Meanwhile, health experts have warned that the new, more virulent variant may lead to the spurt of a third wave of the pandemic in the country.
