A third wave seems imminent as Odisha recorded the highest single-day jump in COVID-19 cases in nearly five months on Wednesday after 1,216  people tested positive for the virus, informed the State Information and Public Relations Department (I&PR).

The positivity rate jumped to 1.76 per cent and 187 children were among those found positive in the past 24 hours.

The State saw a double rise in number as on Tuesday the State had logged 680 COVID-19 cases. While on Monday it had registered 424 COVID-19 cases.

Among the 1216 new infections, 710 are quarantine cases and 506 are local contacts, said the department.

With this, the Covid-19 positive tally in the State has surged to 10,57,876 while the active cases stand at 3,981 and the number of recoveries at 10,45,376 till date. The death toll due to Covid-19 has climbed up to 8,466 in the State with two more deaths in the last 24 hours.

Khordha reported most of the new cases with 456 infections, followed by 166 in Sundargarh, 110 in State Pool, 99 in Sambalpur and 80 in Cuttack, it said. Two deaths from the virus infection were reported from Khordha district.

Odisha so far has tested 2,57,52,819 samples, including 51,745in the last 24 hours, for Covid-19. At present, the test positivity rate (TPR) stands at 4.1percent, the I&PR department said.

On the other hand, Odisha has recorded as many as 37 cases of Omicron variant till now.
