Odisha on Sunday witnessed a massive spike in COVID-19 cases with Rayagada district alone reporting 64 positive cases. All the cases detected from Rayagada are reportedly school students.

Rayagada collector Saroj Kumar Mishra informed that the cases have been reported from two hostels in the district. "During random testing, samples of 64 students were found to be positive but they don't have any symptoms. The health condition of all the students is stable and they are kept under supervision," said Mishra.

On Sunday, the State reported 71 new positive cases including 66 in the 0-18 years age group. Active cases in Odisha currently stand at 160 with 1288202 positives and 1278863 recoveries, so far.

It is worth mentioning that the State Health Services Director, Bijay Mohapatra had earlier said people should not be complacent as there was every possibility of a surge in the infection.

“Surveillance and testing are being conducted as per ICMR guidelines. The health officials will take a call on whether Covid positive cases will be allowed for home isolation or they shall be admitted to hospitals,” Mohapatra had said.

"The State government is alert and taking all possible measures to tackle the situation. Covid hospitals will be set up if cases rise in the state," he had added.
